Serengeti Migration Safari seasons
Season 1, January, February and March
Serengeti wildebeest herds are more to Ndutu to feed their newborn calves. The calving grounds can be founded in the area of Southern Seronera. The wildebeest stick around this area until the end of the long rains and in April the herds move again in search of green pastures.
Season 2, April and May
At this time of the year, the newborn calves and foals reach the age of mobility so, they begin to move. The wildebeest leave the Ndutu region and heads northeast towards Moru. They continue moving slowly as the babies are still small and learning to use their legs. Safari at this time offers great value because there is a low number of tourists in Serengeti.
Season 3, June and July
These are the best months to see the wildebeest migration in the Western corridor and on the Southern banks of the Grumeti river. Wildebeest populations travel over great distances and this could take up to three hours to cover the distance between the leading and trailing herds.
Season 4, August, September and October
This time, you may be able to see more than a million animals move from the North and start crossing the Mara river. Mara river crossing is where so many iconic migration pictures have been taken. During this time, smaller herds of wildebeest crossing the Mara river frequently without no reason
Season 5, November and December
In this period a large group of animals cross the Northern plains where the wildebeest return to the short grass plains and calving ground around Ndutu in late November and the great migration starts all over again.
